STYLE & CONTENT

What kind of Yoga do I get to learn and to teach?

The teachings of our educational program are based on a very broad approach to Yoga. The foundations of our practice are classical Hatha Yoga, Spiritual Heart Meditation, and the non-dual vision of Advaita Vedanta. We teach an authentic form of Hatha Yoga which incorporates the focus on breath, chakras, and kundalini energy. Our balanced style combines engaging yang and relaxing yin qualities: The practice incorporates various dynamic elements, such as a variety of warming exercises, different variations of the sun salutations (including classical, A & B), Ashtanga type warrior sequence, demanding standing poses, basic arm balances and more. The contemplative atmosphere of our slow-flow cultivates mindfulness of alignment & breath, and emphasizes a refined awareness of the present moment in the style of Eckhart Tolle. The sequence of 36 asanas includes backward and forward bends, side bends, twists, and inversions. The syllabus also encompasses plenty of powerful pranayama exercises, purification techniques, and a lot of practical yogic philosophy. We transmit the ancient wisdom in an applicable, modern way, and incorporate a variety of classical practices such as meditation, heart centering, Bhajan chanting, Bhakti & Karma Yoga, Raja & Jnana Yoga, and so much more. In the hands-on instructor training we provide applicable tools for alignment & adjustment. To improve your ability to correct students, the curriculum also includes lessons in Thai-Yoga Massage & the art of touch. Lectures on teaching techniques transmit helpful practical knowledge about body language, voice, rhetoric, marketing & networking. We provide individual guidance in several one-on-one sessions, and personally supervise your practicum assignments, offering you detailed teacher & peer feedback. The authentic content of our teachings, the enthusiasm of the group & facilitators, and your sincere openness to transform and dive deep can turn this course into the experience of a lifetime. Our thorough educational approach will ground your understanding in authentic Yoga sources, while helping you to develop and refine your own personal practice. Five practical assignments help the student-teacher cultivate and eventually master the skills needed to successfully teach their own classes . After the practicum sessions the aspiring instructor receives systematic feedback from peers, and very thorough feedback from our advanced supervisors.

Can I find a job as a Yoga teacher?

It is surprisingly easy to find work as a certified Yoga teacher. Most of our graduates start teaching right after our training! In a modern world full of stress and burnout, Yoga has widespread appeal. Countless people need energization, relaxation, and the beautiful harmony that comes from a dedicated Yoga practice. It has been the experience of our students that their humble offerings are gratefully received in their communities. A 2016 study by Yoga Journal & Yoga Alliance shows that there are currently more than 36 million people practicing Yoga in the USA. This is almost twice as many as 4 years ago! Not to mention that there are an additional 80 million Americans with an openness to take a first-time class in the coming year. The enormous numbers of this study show the incredible potential in this flowering alternative field. With almost 40 % of the US population generally open to Yoga, we can be sure that there will be a lot of working opportunities for all of us. When you combine the expanding Yoga scene with the “made in Germany” quality of our training, all doors can open for you. There are innumerable opportunities, and you will for sure find your niche! Here is the link to the mentioned survey: www.YogaAlliance.org/Learn/About_Yoga/2016_Yoga_in_America_Study/Highlights Yoga is a powerful and transformational practice. Come learn the skills that can make sharing yoga as fun as practicing yoga.

Can I join if I only want to deepen my own practice & understanding?

We build on sincere personal practice ourselves and strongly emphasize this essential element in the training. Every course day therefore contains around 4 hours of asana and breathing exercises. A strong self-practice is a wonderful foundation for anybody who wants to explore Yoga on a deeper level. One session per week is dedicated to your individual self-guided practice, and we also share useful recommendations on how to establish your own routine at home. Many of the students who join our courses come only to deepen and enjoy their own personal Yoga practice, without the intention to teach. Nevertheless some who come without that intention wind up teaching. When you love something, sometimes it is hard not to share it! The intensity of the program, the provided material, and our enthusiastic way of transmitting the yogic wisdom, provide a direct encouragement to practice and to pass on this valuable knowledge.

TRAVEL / GETTING HERE

Any advice on good deals for flights?

To find a truly affordable flight to Bali’s airport Denpasar (DPS) make sure to check capable meta flight-search-engines like Momondo, SkyScanner and Kayak – using their flexible dates option. (If you are traveling within Asia or from Australia, specifically check the superb offers of Air Asia & Jet Star. Other budget airlines within Asia include Garuda Indonesia, Citi Link and Lion Air.)

Which dates should I book my flights?

Arrival day is (usually) on Saturday, one day before the beginning of the actual Teacher Training (which starts on Sunday around noon with a welcome session). The common departure day is four weeks later on Sunday, the day after the YTT graduation (which concludes with a party on Saturday evening). Experience however shows that it is a lot nicer to arrive a little bit early to settle in and even stay a few days longer. It is very pleasing to enjoy the delights of the tropical island – especially after the intensity of the educational program!

Is there an airport pick-up?

The taxi ride from the Denpasar airport to Ubud takes about 1 – 1.5 hours. Most of our hosts offer airport pick-ups for 300.000 – 400.000 IDR = Indonesian Rupiah (US $ 23-30). Please contact your hotel or guesthouse beforehand to arrange all details. Since most of the accommodation options near our main venue, as well as the hosting resort itself, are situated in the middle of tropical rice fields with no direct car access, it can be very helpful to make use of their convenient pick-up offer. Their taxi driver will potentially help you to carry your luggage on the last 300-500 meters to your peaceful room. Alternatively, we recommend you to connect with our friend Wayan Sida Laksana of “Bali Antika Tours”. He offers airport pick-ups for 300.000 IDR. Contact him via: E-Mail: Wayan.Laks@gmail.com Phone & WhatsApp: +62 (0)812 3934 083 FB Messenger: www.facebook.com/wayansida.laksana If you haven’t organized a pick-up in advance, it is also no problem to simply book your airport transfer via the pre-paid taxi counter at the Denpasar airport. You will find their desk it in the arrival hall, after the luggage security check (past the waiting drivers). Prices are about the same as with a pre-arranged resort taxi.

Where is the main course venue in Bali?

Our Teacher Training Courses in Bali are hosted by Samyama, a small family style Italian-run retreat center at the southern edge of Ubud. Samyama is located in a quiet neighborhood and enclosed by two small rivers, palm trees and the typical Balinese rice paddies. The venue, nestled in a lush tropical setting, provides a peaceful escape, while still being within reach of the bustling town. The small secluded resort is just a 10-minute walk away from downtown Ubud, the cultural center and Yoga capital of Bali. Ubud is a legendary exotic town with impressive traditional temples, art galleries, Yoga boutiques, affordable spas, and countless amazing health food restaurants. https://samyama.com/

What kind of visa do you recommend?

There are two simple visa options for Bali, Indonesia. Both of them are very easy as they do not require a prior application at an embassy: The first one is the “visa exemption”. Upon arrival one simply receives a stamp in the passport. It is free of charge and allows residents of most countries to stay in Bali for 30 days. Please check though, if this rule applies to your specific passport as well! This visa is not extendable, but it is possible to “overstay” a few days for a small fee (US $ 20-25 per day, depending on exchange rate). So you can easily stay some 30-33 days in this way. The second option is the so-called “Visa on Arrival” (VoA), which costs US $ 35 (to be paid in US Dollars, AUD or Euros) and also allows you to stay for 30 days. But this second option can be extended for another 30 days later on! With this Visa on Arrival you can stay a total of 60 days in Bali. The separate VoA counter is before the regular immigration cues in the arrival hall. In case you missed this special counter for VoA, please insist at the regular immigration desk that they show you where to pay for your VoA. You cannot change your visa type afterwards. If your time allows, you might want to look into getting an actual tourist visa from an Indonesian Embassy before you start travelling. This enables you to stay 60 days straight away without any hassle and will cost about the same as getting the Visa on Arrival (VoA) in Bali (which costs US $ 35 at the airport, plus about US $ 45 for the following extension). Whichever way you are choosing, please check if there are any special requirements for your specific passport and make sure that your passport is still valid for at least another 6 months after your return. Please also note that there is no such thing as a departure fee or departure tax like some guidebooks suggest.

ACCOMODATION

What is the character of the on-site accommodation?

Samyama offers the choice between budget accommodation in simple single rooms or dormitory with shared bathrooms, and a more luxurious stay in the next door villa in deluxe single size studios or shared twin space with a private bathroom. Your stay at Samyama comes with regular room-cleaning service, free Wi-Fi and drinking water. Check out the visual impressions and details in our accommodation brochure.

Are there any budget friendly rooms?

There are a variety of amazing options in the direct neighborhood of the course venue. The guesthouses are within walking distance of the main venue and cater to different tastes & budgets. Previous students have stayed at Ketut Cottages, Dana Jaya Villa, The Athaya Hotel and Villa Grace. Most of them can be found on booking platforms like AirBnB or Booking.com by simply looking up their name (in the Ubud, Bali section).

Where do I stay if I come a few days early?

If you have the time, it is wonderful to arrive a few days before the course to settle into island life and adjust to any time change. If time permits, it can also be nice to stay a while after and relax while soaking up the delights of tropical Bali. When coming to Ubud a few days early, or staying in town after the training, we recommend the affordable places in the area surrounding Samyama. Please refer to the options & tips mentioned in the previous question just above.

HEALTH & SAFETY

What does medical care on the island look like?

Bali covers all the facilities needed for any basic health concern. There are a large number of very well-equipped pharmacies & drugstores in the nearby downtown area of Ubud, Guardian being one of them: https://goo.gl/xcRbga. They provide all standard Western medicine as well as the most common supplements. For small accidents or illnesses there are a few clinics & hospitals directly in Ubud. In more serious or complex cases, people make use of the bigger hospitals in the Denpasar area, which is about an hour drive away by taxi.

Is Bali safe?

Bali is a fairly safe place, especially if compared with many of the big cities in this world, and the many countries with social tensions. Nevertheless, it is ,of course, always advisable to apply common sense in all your actions and movements. Applying common sense means, for example, to not leave valuables on the beach unattended, and to keep your room locked & windows shut when sleeping or leaving the house. (Be extra careful when you come a few days early to stay in the popular tourist areas Kuta & Seminyak.) Secondly, if you get your cash with a credit card at an ATM, make sure to use only machines inside of an actual bank branch. In recent years, ATM scams are globally getting more frequent and the so-called skimming of credit cards is more common in stand-alone machines and unwatched booths.

What is the best way to deal with money?

The local currency is called Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). The exchange rates are commonly fluctuating around: 1 Euro = 15.000 IDR and 1 US $ = 13.500 IDR. Check www.xe.com for the latest rates. We recommend bringing money in a mixture of credit card and cash. ATM cash withdrawal machines are frequent, and they accept all common credit, debit, and EC-Maestro cards. (To reduce risk & fees, it’s best to find machines within an actual bank office that have a 100.000 IDR sticker, as they can provide the highest amount of 3.000.000 IDR). It is also very easy to exchange foreign currencies in banks. Credit cards are only accepted at more expensive hotels and restaurants.

Are there options for my special diet?

Our tuition already includes tasty breakfast on all 24 teaching days of the month. The healthy vegetarian breakfast also offers vegan options, and consists of fresh tropical fruit, bread and optional egg, as well as changing warm dishes, such as porridge or fried noodles. Most food in Asia is gluten free and without dairy products. Egg is used in some traditional dishes, but it is no problem to ask for egg-free variations when eating in the local restaurants. Ubud has an astonishingly wide range of health-food & organic restaurants & eateries. The variety of raw food restaurants is extraordinary given the size of the town. When eating out it is no trouble at all to find something that will suit your specific tastes. On top of this, the health-food shops connected to Bali Buda, Down to Earth and Alchemy restaurants provide certain supplements, nuts, seeds, muesli and various other items for a happy vegan / vegetarian diet.

GOOD TO KNOW

What will the weather be like?

Bali is a tropical island near the equator. Coming from most western countries the climate may seem hot and humid. Short but impressively heavy rainfalls, which are characteristic of the tropics, can appear as a welcome relief as they tend to cool soaring temperatures. Rain typically lasts for a short time, and unless you’ll come in the peak monsoon months of mid-December to mid-February, it will not interfere much with your activities on the island. To be on the safe side, it is wise to bring a raincoat and / or umbrella.

What do I need to know about the culture of Bali?

The customs of Bali are very different from what we might be used to in the Western world. Balinese locals are far politer, and in their own way more conservative, than most Westerners. They don’t show any physical affection in public, for example, and they dress quite modestly. Informal clothing is fairly common and acceptable in Bali. As Ubud is a major tourist destination, local people are used to the casual attire of most Westerners. However, a lot of Balinese people don’t consider bare-chested men and bikini-clad women to be acceptably dressed, whether on the streets, or in restaurants & shops. If visiting a temple men and women are expected to wear shirts that cover shoulders and part of the upper arms, as well as long skirts or trousers. Flip-flops are perfectly acceptable. Ideally men & women should wear a Sarong around the legs and a temple scarf around the waist when visiting a sacred place. Most temples provide those for a small donation, but you can also buy a set at a local market or shop. Bali has two main languages: Balinese and Bahasa Indonesia (which is the common language of Indonesia). Both languages do not have anything in common. Balinese speak Balinese in their homes and with each other, but learn Bahasa Indonesia (and English) in school. Saying “Hello” in Balinese is “Swastiastu” and “Selamat siang” in Bahasa Indonesia. “Thank you” is “Suksma” in Balinese and “Terima kasih” in Bahasa. The “wai” hand gesture (popular in Thailand & India) is not so common in Bali, but can be a polite gesture in certain situations. You also don’t need to bow as you would do in Japan — a smile and handshake are enough.

PRACTICALITIES

How to prepare for the tropical weather?

Bali is a tropical island. The weather tends to be hot and humid with a chance of rainfall every now and then. Thin long sleeve shirts / cardigans as well as shawls / sarongs can be useful in the early morning hours or to protect yourself from mosquitoes during sitting meditation in the twilight times of the day. For the occasional rain a very light rain-jacket or an umbrella can be very useful.

What do I need to bring for the course?

Please bring your own Yoga mat. Although you can buy one on the island, it will make your arrival much smoother if you are already prepared and don’t need to walk around looking for the right mat. Good quality Yoga mats are not readily available, and tend to be more expensive than they are in the West. As you will spend a whole month on your personal mat, cheap is not really the best option. So we recommend that you bring a good mat with you. We will provide comprehensive course material in printed form on the welcome day, so there is no need to bring hard copies of the preparation materials. Just bring a notebook, and a couple of pens and highlighters to write down some additional information. A laptop or tablet is not required. There are advantages in saving your notes digitally right away, but electronic devices can also be a considerable distraction, so it’s up to you to decide.
We have a wonderful and extensive collection of digital media relating to yoga practice and philosophy that we very much encourage students to take advantage of. For this purpose, we highly recommend bringing an external hard drive of 2 TB size.

How about my Yoga mat and my props?

Please bring your own Yoga mat for the course. In Ubud, you can buy one, but they tend to be low quality, and can be quite expensive. We do have blocks & cushions, so there is no need to bring those with you.

What kind of supplies are good to get?

Ubud in Bali, provides most of what you might need in a month-long stay at a Yoga course in the tropics. There are supermarkets & convenience stores, as well as health-food shops & markets which offer groceries & toiletries, western snacks & foods, clothes & jewelry, as well as souvenirs & decorative items. When buying on the street or in a market, it’s good to practice your bargaining skills. In specialized shops you will also find Yoga mats, Yoga clothes, incense, malas and the lot. Prices are not necessarily cheaper than in your home country, but Ubud has an astonishing range of products related to Yoga and meditation, as well as products supporting a healthy life-style. Supplements, nuts, seeds, muesli and other health-food items for a happy vegan / vegetarian or organic diet can be found in health-food stores on both islands. Just know that most organic or health food products & supplements – apart from fresh produce – are imported from Australia or the US and come with the respective prices.

SERVICES

Where do I get lunch and dinner?

Our tuition already includes breakfast buffets, but the costs for lunch and dinner are not covered. We offer additional lunch buffets for an additional cost, and dinner is a wonderful opportunity to go out with friends, and you can choose between various (health food) restaurants, bistros and market stalls all within walking distance. These provide a wide selection of excellent food at affordable prices of around US $ 2-5 per meal. On Sundays, students love to explore the island, and enjoy eating out in fancy resorts & tempting restaurants. Restaurants cater to all kinds of tastes and budgets, and most will have vegetarian or vegan options available.

What do I do with my laundry?

Laundry services are plentiful, and very close to the main venue. Typically you drop your clothes at the laundry shop at any given time of day, and pick it up machine washed and dried about 24 hours later. The price is around US $ 1-2 per kilogram.

Can I rent a motorbike or bicycle?

We do not recommend driving a motorbike, unless you are an experienced & careful driver! Motorbike accidents with newbies are unfortunately quite frequent on the island, so we advise you to use caution. (In case you do choose to rent a bike, you will need to wear a helmet, and be fully aware of the left-hand traffic, dogs, sand, and the chaotic style of driving. For most motorbike rental agreements, you will need to leave your passport with the company in their safe storage in compliance with local laws.) A pleasant alternative to motorbikes is to rent a bicycle, which can also be a form of additional exercise! Having a bicycle enables you to cover distances around town which are a bit too far to walk, but are perhaps too close to go by taxi. Just keep in mind that the sun is very hot during the daytime.

How about WiFi?

All over South-East Asia, you will find reasonable free WiFi in public places like restaurants, hotels, and guesthouses. Balinese internet might not be as steadfast and reliable as in the West, but it is usually good enough to organize daily life. In the remote rice-fields of Bali, the Internet is at times unreliable. Video calls and media streaming can be limited. If Internet is important to you, it is good to check the connection before booking a room. If the WiFi turns out to be slower or more erratic than you can bear, consider buying a cheap 3G internet SIM card for your mobile device.

Should I buy a SIM card?

It is quite easy to get a cheap prepaid local SIM card in any South-East Asian country and to buy a phone or 3G internet package that suits your needs. For the initial registration you need to bring your passport. Later on, you can top up your credit in selected supermarkets and phone shops. Simple mobile phones are quite affordable, but it makes sense to bring an unlocked smartphone if you have one.

Do I need adapters for my electrical devices?

Bali has quite reliable power networks which supply standard: 220 V, 50 Hz. Sockets & plugs are pretty compatible US / European style (2-pole flat and / or round; usually no third earth. Bali plugs frequently do not match flat poles). Even though some adaptors are available on the island, we recommend bringing the appropriate adaptors for your devices from home.

PROVISION / PRECAUTION

Do I need any vaccination?

Regarding immunizations, it is best to seek professional advice with a health care provider or immunization specialist that you trust. A professional clinician can easily recommend what is advisable and necessary. Travel medical clinics can be found in most large towns or cities, or your primary care provider can also give referrals. The following websites can provide facts about medical issues that might relate to your trip to Asia: – The London Hospital of Tropical Diseases: www.TheHTD.org – Center for Disease Control and Prevention: www.cdc.gov/travel – Canada Public Health Agency: www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/tmp-pmv – A Bali specific overview: www.bali.com/vaccinations-health-diseases.html

What is the best way to deal with money?

We recommend bringing money in a mixture of credit card and cash. ATM cash withdrawal machines are frequent, and they accept all common credit, debit, and EC-Maestro cards. It is also easy to exchange foreign currencies in banks, or currency exchange booths. Credit cards are only accepted at more expensive hotels and restaurants.

How about insurance for my trip?

We highly recommend booking flights with flexible conditions and travel cancelation insurance to assure a reimbursement of expenses in case of sickness, natural disasters etc.! We also recommend purchasing travel medical insurance to cover any emergencies! Though there is some variation country to country, many national health insurances already include around six weeks of annual international travel insurance. Verify your policy with your agent. Alternatively, banks and credit card companies provide affordable offers for short periods. International short- and long-term insurances are offered by many companies: One of the best values is provided by the international travel agency STA: www.statravel.com/worldwide.htm (find your native office via the “select a country” drop down menu). If none of the above options works for you, check the following pricier offers: – www.WorldNomads.com – www.Globality-Health.com – www.bupa-intl.com – www.HealthCareInternational.com – www.AllianzTravelinsurance.com In addition to that, the best choice is of course to stay healthy with a pure & mindful life-style.

What does traveling in the tropics mean?

Ubud in Bali are generally speaking very safe & easy places to travel. Tourism has been around for decades and the locals know by and large what the most basic needs of the Western travelers are. A few common basic things to consider can anyhow do no harm: Drinking: Make sure to hydrate sufficiently (a minimum of 3 liters per day, usually even more), as the heat and the intense training are going to generate some sweat. Tap water is no drinking water! Filtered drinking water can be purchased everywhere. We do provide free drinking water in our Yoga hall to reduce any unnecessary garbage. Food: “Peel it, cook it, or forget it”, they said back in the colonial days. Until today this is the advice if you want to stay super safe. In health conscious Ubud digestive issues are rare. Even ice-cubes are usually not a problem in these places. But it is certainly a good advice to at least give your body a few days to arrive fully and then start exploring cautiously, applying common sense and preferably staying on the vegetarian / vegan side of things. A solid constitution and pro-biotic supplements taken a (few) week(s) in advance can give additional protection. Roommates: The tropics come with lush vegetation, and a rich & vibrant nature. Tropical nature might include the encounter with animals & insects you are not used to or you think you don’t like. Please stay open-minded and acknowledge that beautiful butterflies & colorful birds come in a package deal with mosquitoes, ants and many other insects. There is none without the other. And none is doing us or the people who have been living in this part of the world for millennia any harm. Celebrate a yogic life-style, enjoying the authentic connection to real nature.
