Sandbanks Style Kayaks: How To Inflate & Assemble Your Sandbanks Style Drop Stitch Kayak

Setting Up Your Sandbanks Style Inflatable Kayak

If you’re used to a traditional inflatable kayak, you’ll immediately notice the difference with your Sandbanks Style drop stitch inflatable kayak. The upgraded construction and high-pressure system deliver a much stiffer, more responsive feel on the water—closer to a hard-shell kayak experience.

The first setup may take slightly longer, but once inflated correctly, you’ll be rewarded with a rock-solid, high-performance inflatable kayak built for stability, speed, and tracking.

How To Set Up Your Inflatable Kayak

Step 1 – Ensure The Valve Is Closed

Before inflating, check the valve is in the closed position. The spring-loaded pin should be up; twist if needed. This ensures air stays sealed inside the chamber.

Step 2 – Attach The Pump Hose

Secure the pump hose firmly onto the inflation port (INF). Make sure the connection is tight to prevent air leakage.

Step 3 – Connect To The Kayak Valve

Insert and twist the hose into the valve. You can start with any chamber, there’s no strict order.

Step 4 – Use Double Action Inflation

Set your pump to double action mode to inflate on both upstroke and downstroke. This speeds up initial inflation significantly.

Step 5 – Begin Pumping

Start inflating. The kayak will begin to take shape quickly, but pressure readings may not appear immediately... this is normal.

Step 6 – Switch To Single Action

As resistance increases, switch to single action mode for easier final inflation and better pressure control.

Step 7 – Inflate To 10–12 PSI

Continue pumping until you reach 10–12 PSI, the optimal pressure for rigidity, performance, and tracking.

Step 8 – Disconnect & Seal

Remove the pump hose and securely fasten the valve cap to lock in pressure.

Step 9 – Inflate Remaining Chambers

Repeat the process for any additional chambers to ensure full structural stability.

Seating Setup

Attach your seat by connecting:

Rear straps to rear D-rings (controls seat position)

Front straps to front D-rings (adjusts back support angle)

Adjust while seated for maximum comfort before launching.

🧭 Fin, Footrests & Splash Guard

Install The Fin

Slide the fin into position and secure it. This improves straight-line tracking and stability.

Footrests (Explorer Only)

Adjust footrests to suit your leg length. Aim for a slight knee bend for efficient paddling posture.

Splash Guard (Explorer Only)

Attach the splash guard for improved protection in choppier conditions.

Paddle Assembly

Connect the shaft sections, then attach both blades. Slight blade offset improves paddling efficiency and reduces fatigue over longer sessions.

Safety Checklist Before Launch

Before heading out, always ensure:

You are wearing a buoyancy aid

Weather and wind conditions are suitable

Someone knows your planned route

You carry essentials like water, a dry bag, and a waterproof phone case
