Touring Paddle Boards… The Complete Guide
You’ve been paddleboarding for years, or you’re just starting out, and you’re trying to find the perfect paddleboard for you. Well you’ve probably come across touring boards by now, but what actually is a touring board… and do you really need one?
In simple terms, a touring paddle board is designed for distance, glide, and efficiency, making it the ideal choice for paddlers who want to go further and move more smoothly through the water.
They’re a natural step up from all-rounder inflatable paddle boards, and once you try one, the difference is instantly noticeable, and yes, for lots of beginner paddlers they may initially be harder to use, but that doesn’t mean they’re not perfect for what you’re looking for to maximise your time on the water!
What Makes a Touring Paddle Board Different?
Unlike all-round boards, touring paddle boards are built specifically with performance in mind.
Given this they’re typically longer, narrower, and more streamlined. This helps you; glide further with each paddle stroke; track straighter through the water; and maintain speed more easily. In short… less effort, more distance, so perfect for… touring!!
Touring Paddle Board Shape & Design
Upon first sight of a touring board you’ll immediately notice some fundamental differences when compared to an all-rounder board. They’re noticeably longer, and have a more pointed nose, so how does this change their performance on the water. Well, this more streamlined shape improves speed and glide, helps with tracking, and creates a smoother paddling experience overall, which for touring paddle adventures all benefit you when you are out on the water for long periods of time.
They may feel slightly less stable at first, but once you’re comfortable, they open up a completely different style of paddling.
Why Choose a Touring Paddle Board?
So why would I suggest choosing a touring board, and is it exactly what you need for your next paddling adventure? Well some important benefits to consider are as follows;
Built for Distance: Perfect for longer paddles on lakes, rivers, and coastal routes.
More Efficient: Travel further and for longer with less effort compared to shorter boards.
Smoother Glide: Designed to move cleanly through the water.
Ideal for Progression: A great next step if you’ve outgrown an all-round paddle board… and can’t keep up with your touring buddies!!
Construction Matters Even More in Touring Boards
With touring boards, construction becomes even more important, and often this is where inflatable touring boards of the past have failed to deliver. As they’re longer, stiffness becomes key to ensure that they hold shape in the water, and therefore a stiffer touring board not only holds its shape more efficiently, but it also glides better and feels faster and more stable over longer distances.
This is where premium construction really starts to stand out.
Pro Touring Paddle Boards: Pro X Sports Touring vs California Pro
Both touring models sit within the Pro range, meaning they benefit from:
Welded rail construction
High-density laminated PVC
Enhanced durability and stiffness.
But, importantly, they’re designed for slightly different types of paddlers. So here is what you need to know!!
California Touring (Entry-Level Touring & Stability)
The California Touring paddle board is a great introduction to touring. We’ve designed it with a slightly wider and shorter profile than a typical touring board, still giving you the advantages of improved glide through the water, but maintaining some of the extra stability provided by an all-round paddleboard.
If you’re moving into touring for the first time, the California Touring SUP offers that extra confidence while still delivering the improved glide and efficiency you’d want from a touring board.
Pro X Sports Touring (Performance & Efficiency)
On the other hand, the Pro X Sports Touring paddle board is designed for paddlers looking for greater performance. Constructed with cross stitch core construction, it is significantly lighter than a typical touring board, and the longer, more streamlined shape improves
Also constructed with a lower 4.75” depth as opposed to a more traditional 6” depth, the Pro X Sports Touring offers a lower centre of gravity which again helps improve stability which is key when on a longer board.
The result is a faster, more responsive board that feels incredibly smooth over distance.

Why These Differences Matter
We’ve developed both boards for touring, but they offer different experiences on the water.
The California gives you confidence, stability, and performance, whilst the Pro X Sports Touring gives you speed, efficiency, and performance.
My Final Thoughts
Touring paddle boards bring a different level of performance to paddleboarding. They’re designed for movement, distance, and efficiency, not as leverage to spring yourself into the water beachside on a hot summer day… although I have been known to use them for that from time to time.
As always, construction plays a huge role. Features like welded rail construction and cross stitch cores don’t just improve performance, they help ensure your board holds up over time, and your adventures aren’t just limited to the season ahead
So whether you’re stepping into touring for the first time or looking for a faster, more refined ride… there’s a board built for how you want to paddle, and as always we’re here to help, give us an email or a call to ask any questions!!
